Punta Arenas
Thursday, April 11

Visiting southern Patagonia was a dream come true! After visiting glaciers, mountains, and lagoons in Patagonia's national parks, we drove a little further south to our final stop on the trip, the city of Punta Arenas.
From Punta Arenas, our flight eventually would take us back to Lima, Peru, where we would then fly back to Germany after another two weeks. Punta Arenas is considered the southernmost city in the world, located several hundred kilometers further south than New Zealand (what most people would consider to be the southernmost country). We spent the day here before our return flight, strolling along the waterfront promenade overlooking the vast ocean and talking over and over about how crazy it is to be standing at the end of the world, looking at the sea.
On our last day in Patagonia we visited one last national park just outside the city of Punta Arenas and took one last hike through the national park's vast forest area. Since it was autumn in Patagonia, the leaves on the trees were orange-red, and on the highest point of the hike we had the most amazing view overlooking the forest up to the coast. A few hours later on that same evening, we picked up our suitcases from the hotel and took a taxi to Punta Arenas airport. Our vacation in Patagonia was the most wonderful finale to our 1-year-long trip through Europe and Latin America that we could have imagined, and we will remember this place forever.
