Museo de la Cultura Teotihuacana

A bit hidden behind the pyramids, there is also a small museum on site where stone reliefs of the pyramids, smaller finds from the area and a model of the city of Teotihuacán are exhibited.

Because we wanted to avoid the crowds that would arrive at Teotihuacán at noon, we took the first bus in the morning from Mexico City and were in Teotihuacán as soon as the archeological site opened. We wanted to enjoy this peaceful and quiet time with only few other visitors being there so the first thing we did was not visiting the museum but walking up to the pyramids on site and the city of Teotihuacán. It wasn't until many hours (and many thousands of steps) later that we went to the museum at the end of our visit.

In the museum we were particularly impressed by the miniature model of the Teotihuacan complex. The model made it clear how extensive the urban area actually was and how many individual pyramids of different sizes and in different locations there were.

We also really loved seeing the huge stone reliefs and sculptures on display that originally hung on the facade of the pyramids. Since they are now attached to the wall in the museum, visitors can get relatively close to the sculptures and see all the details of the stone work in detail.

For us it made sense that day to first go to the actual pyramids outside and then visit the museum after, because we had already looked into the history and significance of the complex before our visit to Teotihuacán and had read a lot about it. So we already knew a lot about the place and were able to wander around the pyramids early in the morning before thousands of tourists arrived in the afternoon.

Overall it was an amazing and interesting day and in my opinion this is the best day trip there is if you are based in Mexico City!
