Panadería San Matías

One morning, while looking for a bakery close to our apartment I discovered this inconspicuous bakery on a small side street that not only offered good bread, but also delicious empanadas.

Although the bakery didn’t offer that many types of bread, there were breads in different sizes and a surprisingly large selection of different empanadas! For those of you who never heard of empanadas: these are small, oven-baked savory pastries, usually made from a dough made from wheat flour and butter and filled with various fillings.

Christoph and I know empanadas from South America and especially love empanadas because they are the perfect little bite to snack on wherever you are as they can be eaten very easily, without the need of cutlery or plates. Since you can rarely buy empanadas in Germany, I was immediately thrilled that this little bakery in Granada offered them and bought four of them. At home we tried the four different types of empanadas. All of them were super tasty, but very rich due to the generous filling of different types of cheeses and hams. These four empanadas turned our to be more than a snack as they were so much more filling than expected and kept us full for the next few hours.

During our time in Granada, we regularly bought bread and empanadas from the lovely owner of this bakery, but now knew that even one of the huge empanadas was enough to fill us up!
