Empanadas
Sunday, March 24
After a wonderful weekend in the Bolivian jungle, we returned to La Paz to go to the airport. El Alto Airport is the highest airport in the world, located at an altitude of 4,100 meters. From here, we departed for the 13th country of our trip: Argentina!
A few hours of flying and one transfer later, we finally landed on Argentinian soil in the city of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires had long interested Christoph and me—unfortunately, the city is so far south that it's not that easy to get there, even from South America. We therefore debated for a long time whether to go to Buenos Aires. Ultimately, however, we decided to go for it because, from a global perspective, we were already much closer to Buenos Aires in Bolivia than we would be from Germany in the future.
After arriving in Buenos Aires, we took a taxi from the airport to our Airbnb, which was located in the quiet and modern district of "Palermo." We unpacked our things and shortly after, we set off for our first walk through the neighborhood. With a coffee in hand, we strolled through Buenos Aires, enjoying the good weather, the beautiful architecture, and the many trees and plants in the city. Looking for a snack, we entered our first bakery in Buenos Aires and were delighted by the wide selection of empanadas. Empanadas are filled pastries that we were already familiar with from other Latin American countries. In Argentina, however, empanadas are taken even more seriously. Here, they come with thousands of different fillings, and even the smallest bakery has a variety of empanadas to choose from.
Since we couldn't decide, we bought a few empanadas to go. We ate the first ones on the go, and enjoyed the rest at home over the next few days. Over the weeks, this little bakery on the corner became our favorite empanada spot, and every variety we tried there was simply delicious.
