Moroccan Sweets
Tuesday, August 15
To this day, Arab influences can be seen in many cities in Andalusia. In Granada, especially in buildings, restaurants and Arabic spice markets in the Albaicín district.
If you stroll through the small streets there, you will immediately notice the many Arabic bakeries that offer a huge selection of Arabic cookies and sweets. Since Christoph and I visited Morocco a few years ago, we were particularly happy to find some of the Moroccan specialties we were familiar with in the bakeries of Granada. Most Moroccan cookies consist of a thin shortcrust pastry that is then filled with various nuts, marzipan or syrup. The use of rose or orange blossom water is also typical for this type of Arabic sweets. This gives the cookies a fresh and slightly perfumed taste that goes very well with the various nuts.
My recommendation for the Arabic bakeries in the Albaicín in Granada is: instead of choosing only one cookie to eat by yourself, it’s best to buy a selection of the different cookies/desserts and do a little tasting with friends!
