Helado de Canela
Tuesday, March 19
While we lived in La Paz for a few weeks, we continued working remotely during the day. After work and on the weekends, we explored the city. On our many walks through La Paz, we repeatedly saw small stalls selling a deep red creamy substance in cups.
Because we had only ever seen these stalls from a distance, we couldn't tell exactly what kind of dessert (at least we assumed it would be something sweet) it was. The next time we were in the city, however, we decided to find out and approached the stall. As we stood in front of it, we saw that it was a big pile of ice cream, some type of sorbet. Christoph ordered a cup of the sorbet, and to his great delight, it turned out to be cinnamon sorbet, "Helado de Canela." The deep red color was just red dye to make the ice cream look more vibrant. Since there’s no one in the world who loves the flavor of cinnamon more than Christoph does, he was very happy about this find. Back home in the apartment, we talked about getting a cup of cinnamon sorbet more often in the next few weeks (while we were still staying in La Paz).
A few days later, I had finished my sketchbook drawing of the cinnamon ice cream stall. When we went back to the stand shortly before our departure from La Paz to take the sketchbook photo for my website, the (mobile) stand was unfortunately no longer there. And on that very last day, we couldn't find any of the many mobile cinnamon ice cream stands in the entire city. Therefore, the corresponding sketchbook photo had to be taken in front of one of the city's many kiosks.
But even now while we are back in Germany, we still talk about this delicious treat that was the cinnamon sorbet in La Paz, Bolivia. We hope to be able to enjoy another cup of the delicious, red cinnamon ice cream next time we're in La Paz!
